... is known in North America as rutabaga (root–uh–BAY–guh), or Swedish turnip. The word 'rutabaga' comes from the Swedish for 'root lump' or 'root bunch'.
Wikipedia cites sources which indicate that swede "was most likely bred on more than one occasion in Northern Europe, around the 16th century", and "was developed independently in both Finland and Sweden". "The first known printed reference to the rutabaga", Wikipedia also explains, "comes from the Swiss botanist Gaspard Bauhin in 1620, where he notes that it was growing wild in Sweden."
